One Month In, And The Gov’t Is Already $257 Billion In The Red – DOGE Has A Lot Of Work To Do (I & I) — On Tuesday, Donald Trump announced that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy would head the “Department of Government Efficiency.” That same day, the Treasury Department released a report showing why this effort is so desperately needed. In his announcement, Trump said that he’s assigned the two to “dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies.” It will, he said, “become, potentially, ‘The Manhattan Project’ of our time.” At Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally in late October, Musk, when asked how much he thought he could “rip out of this $6.5 trillion Harris-Biden budget,” said: “Well, I think we could do at least $2 trillion.” Washington insiders scoffed at the entire idea of a “government efficiency” department or that these two government outsiders could somehow find $2 trillion to cut. The truth is a Manhattan Project-level effort will be needed to restore a semblance of fiscal responsibility to the federal government. See full story |
Democrat Civil War Escalates As Party Turns On Pelosi (PJ Media) — I said before that an intraparty civil war may be brewing in the Democratic Party in the wake of the Republican Party’s tremendous victory in the 2024 elections. And evidence continues to build. Everyone is looking to blame someone for the loss. Fingers have been pointed at Joe Biden for not dropping out earlier, Kamala Harris for running a terrible campaign, and Tim Walz for being Tim Walz. The party’s problems appear to be getting worse, as Pelosi is now being told to “take a seat” and get out of the way. Among other issues, Pelosi faces mounting criticism from her Democrat colleagues for publicly undermining her successor, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Pelosi’s recent remarks, particularly in an interview with the New York Times, have ignited a firestorm within the party, with several Democrats privately expressing their frustration. The tension stems from Pelosi’s comments suggesting that President Joe Biden should have exited the 2024 race earlier. “Had that happened, there may have been other candidates in the race,” she said, fueling yet another round of finger-pointing between Biden and Harris factions. "Meanwhile, the rate has fallen seven percentage points among Democratic men, to 29%, and is down five points among independent men, to 39%," Gallup added. "Republican men remain the most likely gun owners among gender and party identification subgroups, at 60%." See full story |
'I Might Get Mugged': Wealthy Bay Area Residents Rail Against Housing (SF Gate) — An all-too-familiar political skirmish about affordable housing is playing out in Menlo Park. The city, which is home to Meta, joins other wealthy San Mateo County cities – such as Atherton and Hillsborough – that are figuring out how to satisfy new housing quotas set by the state without infuriating residents. During an hourslong meeting Tuesday night, the Menlo Park City Council voted to temporarily table a proposal to build several hundred units of low-income housing across three parking lots in the city’s downtown after dozens of residents, many of them business owners, spoke out against it. “If I don’t have parking, my business is dead,” the co-owner of an electronics repair shop told the council. The proposal is the result of the city’s housing element, a state-mandated plan that requires individual cities to build a certain number of new homes by 2031. See full story |
Sweden, Finland Warn Residents To Be Ready For War: 'Situation Is Serious' (NY Post) — Sweden and Finland have all begun warning their residents to prepare for the possibility of war as Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine rages on. Stockholm on Monday published its latest version of “In Case of Crisis or War,” a pamphlet instructing civilians on how to prepare for, and ride out, a national crisis that was last sent out in 2018. The pamphlet, which has been issued five times since World War II, is now twice as long at 32 pages and focuses on war preparations as the Swedish government warns of the worsening situation in Ukraine. “The security situation is serious and we all need to strengthen our resilience to face various crises and ultimately war,” said Mikael Frisell, director of the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency. Lame-Duck Biden Ramps Up Sanctions On Israelis – And Eases Up On Terrorists (NY Post) — As he heads for the exit, President Biden is easing sanctions on Hamas and Hezbollah – while sanctioning Jews in Israel. Under pressure from Israel-bashing critics, including scores of congressional Democrats, a president who stood firmly behind Israel after the Oct. 7 massacre seems to have lost his moral compass. And just as President Barack Obama in his last months in office allowed the UN Security Council to pass a resolution slamming Israel, Biden may use sanctions to further turn the screws on the Jewish state in his lame-duck stretch. In 2022, the Treasury Department determined that the Foundation for Global Political Exchange, a U.S.-based non-profit, would violate sanctions laws by inviting Hamas and Hezbollah to a conference it was planning in Beirut. Scientists Unveil New Antibiotic To Combat Drug-Resistant Superbugs (Scitech Daily) — In a significant advancement, a modified darobactin compound has shown promise in treating drug-resistant bacterial infections in animal models, offering a potential new weapon against pathogens like E. coli that increasingly evade current antibiotics. Antibacterial drugs are essential for treating infections, but the growing problem of bacterial resistance has rendered many current treatments less effective or even useless. This has created an urgent need for new solutions. Researchers publishing in ACS Infectious Diseases have developed a modified version of darobactin, a compound originally derived from bacteria, showing promise as a potential antibacterial treatment. In proof-of-concept animal trials, the modified compound demonstrated effectiveness against drug-resistant bacteria, including E. coli. See full story |
