Government-Mandated Immorality
and Self-Esteem in Public Education

"To educate a man in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society" — Theodore Roosevelt

Moral character and leadership, exercised with integrity and reinforcing actions, are powerful influences for school children, and for that matter, all children. Perhaps this is why so many parents prefer, should they be fortunate enough to afford it, a faith-based education for their kids.

This fact may also explain why the left so aggressively attacks, and in other instances suppresses, anything religious as long as it serves the larger agenda of aggrandizing all things secular, especially in government schools.

Secularism, the charter and bedrock philosophy for the left, is defined as "indifference to, or rejection and exclusion of, religion and religious considerations."

What better way for government school administrators (and by default, teacher's unions) to avoid the obvious, and instead focus on student's self-esteem. That's easy. Just make the kid feel good. Teaching moral character isn't permitted, having long ago been excluded from the charter, gone the way of grades in Citizenship, a now offensive topic since so many students aren't citizens.

Six years ago, the February 1996 issue of the scientific journal Psychology Review, included the article "Undue pride tied to violence." The article stated "The societal pursuit of high self-esteem for everyone may literally end up doing considerable harm. Aggressive people have unusually high self-esteem, defined as 'a favorable global evaluation of oneself, especially compared to achievements."

"You've got a lot of people running around with seriously inflated egos who come crashing down to earth all the time," said study co-author Joseph Boden, a post-doctoral research associate at the University of Virginia. "You've got to attach it to real, concrete accomplishments and skills."

One has to hand it to educators, especially those in California, a state that ranks 47th out of 50 states in academic proficiency. Here the schools are "safe," having become so as a result of specious safe schools laws that require homosexual teachers to discuss their sexuality with children as young as six. You didn't think "safe" meant being free from the physical danger of guns, drugs, and teen pregnancy did you? Here children have loads of self esteem, but in many school districts, little opportunity to excel academically. After all, the individual takes a back seat to the group.

An intelligent child, conditioned to feel good, when there is nothing earned to feel good about, loses his center, his integrity. His instinctive decision-making pattern and thirst for knowledge and challenge then disconnects from reality. Seen any disconnected children lately?

Leftist behaviorists have many solutions, one being "sensitivity training." Ever been to sensitivity training? It's simple: you are forced to endure instruction, against your better judgment, that admonishes you for your value system, and the potential "harm" you may do to another's "self esteem" by projecting your value system on them.

Rules of common sense and objective fairness, tested by years of life experience, are deemed worthless, to be subordinated to the group in an insidious effort to make everyone feel included in the name of diversity. Problem is, everyone feels worse for wear by all the best intentions. Sad isn't it. Life's most valuable lessons, fountains of wisdom and experience ready to be passed to the next generation, instead flushed down the toilet so that bureaucratic microbes can feel good about their patronizing little jobs.

Years ago, objectivist Ayn Rand said:

"When the common good of society is regarded as something apart from and superior to the individual good of its members, it means that the good of some men takes precedence over the good of others, with those others consigned to the status of sacrificial animals."

One look at California K-12, and it's easy to see why so many parents feel their kids are being led like lambs to educational sacrifice, on the alter of diversity and tolerance.

When the Board of Education for the Hayward Unified School District quietly enacted a policy that allows district employees to "come out" in front of children, claiming that the California Student Safety and Violence Prevention Act of 2000 requires such action, one concerned parent said:

"While I agree that no individual should be subjected to any form of harassment or violence, I refuse to allow my responsibility as a parent to be violated by covertly dismantling parental authorization required when sensitive family and sex education issues are addressed as stated in the Education Code. District board members have failed to honor parental discretion and the law."

What this concerned parent may not know is the extent to which Governor Gray Davis, Education Superintendent Delaine Eastin, and countless other state Democratic lawmakers have gone to advance an immoral social engineering project, surreptitiously and without public debate.

Information is power, so know this: If what is going on in California K-12 were to be fully disclosed to California parents, this self-destructive agenda that subordinates real education to social brainwashing would be on the way out starting today. Perhaps it already is. However, we have a bigger challenge as our lapdog TV and print media are as devoted to this agenda as the school administrators and the teachers unions. It's hush-hush. Maybe that's why these slugs want to shut down free speech over the Internet and talk radio. Well, let them try.

These indispensable instruments of unfiltered information are slowing rooting out and bringing into the open these atrocious policies. As educators and enforcers of false tolerance make baseless charges of racism, anti-Semitism and homophobia to intimidate civic leaders, parents and others, it is only a matter of time before more people see through the garbage.

Recently in California, a lesbian teacher took it upon herself to describe her sexual practices with her kindergarten class. When her actions were discovered by parents, she was shocked to find that, "some people think it's OK, and some people think it's not OK."

The more important point is, the subject has no place in schools, period! Schools are for educating children in reading, writing, arithmetic, and character. Anything else is a lie and a fraud, a set of habits increasingly evident, and effectively practiced, by school administrators and teachers unions, all "for the children."
